Tiegerman Middle School Programs
Where Every Child’s Learning Journey Begins

Tiegerman’s Middle School programs are committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment where students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. With locations in Glen Cove and Woodside, our middle schools provide specialized education tailored to meet the unique needs of students with language-based learning differences.
We believe that every student deserves individualized attention to reach their fullest potential. Our small class sizes ensure that students receive personalized instruction, targeted interventions, and the support they need to build confidence and independence.
Our curriculum integrates core subjects, social-emotional learning, and life skills to prepare students for future success. We use research-based teaching strategies that emphasize language development, executive functioning skills, and critical thinking, ensuring that each student has the tools they need to thrive in high school and beyond.
Tiegerman’s Extraordinary Language and Literacy (TELL) Program
Tiegerman’s Extraordinary Language and Literacy (TELL) program is a comprehensive instructional approach designed to support students with language-based reading disorders. Implemented at all Tiegerman locations, TELL provides explicit instruction in reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills to help students become confident, competent readers and communicators.
Literacy instruction is provided 3 to 4 periods daily, using carefully selected phonics, literature-based, and leveled reading programs. These resources are used to ensure students receive daily, systematic instruction in both foundational and advanced literacy skills.
Instruction is differentiated to meet the unique needs of every learner. Through a collaborative model, classroom teachers, speech-language pathologists, and reading specialists work together to deliver targeted, research-based strategies. This transdisciplinary approach ensures that students develop the critical strategies and skills necessary for success in reading, writing, and oral communication.
TELL empowers students to grow as readers, writers, and speakers—building both language skills and confidence every step of the way.
A Well-Rounded Middle School Experience
Beyond academics, students at Tiegerman’s Middle School programs have opportunities to engage in leadership and school-wide activities, including:
- Student Government & Leadership Programs
- Coordinator's Office of Student Activities (COSA)
- A dedicated time during the school day for Clubs which allows students to explore personal interests such as art, technology, music, or drama while building friendships and learning in a relaxed setting.
- Educational trips give students exposure to museums, workplaces, and cultural events. Travel training also builds independence, navigation skills, and confidence in real-world settings.
- Students participate in service learning activities that build empathy and social responsibility, such as food drives, volunteer days, and partnerships with local nonprofits.
- Seasonal and cultural celebrations promote school spirit, diversity, and unity. These events foster community, belonging, and appreciation of different traditions.
- Students learn about financial literacy and teamwork by organizing and managing fundraising events. Funds raised often support school programs or community causes.
Pre-Vocational Training &
Career Readiness
Tiegerman’s Middle School programs incorporate pre-vocational training, which ensures that students are better prepared for the future, both academically and professionally, while also allowing them to explore their interests and develop essential skills.
- Career exploration gives students a clearer idea of their strengths and interests, further education, or career choices
- Vocational training focuses on teaching students valuable, real-world skills like time management, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork
- Early exposure to vocational concepts can make the transition to high school vocational programming, smoother
- Learning new skills and seeing progress in tangible ways helps build confidence. This can be especially beneficial for students who may struggle in traditional academic subjects
- Successfully completing projects or tasks in a pre-vocational program can provide a sense of accomplishment and pride, reinforcing a positive attitude toward learning
