Tiegerman Middle School’s 12:2:2 classrooms provides a structured, specialized environment for young learners with unique developmental needs. This ratio has several key benefits that can significantly improve the learning experience for students with special needs. Benefits include increased individualized attention, enhanced support for diverse needs, better classroom management, more opportunities for social interaction, specialized instruction and focused interventions, and better communication with families. Overall, a 12:2:2 classroom ratio provides a structured, supportive environment where students with special needs can receive tailored instruction, have access to more individualized help, and develop both academically and socially.

Tiegerman Middle School’s 12:1:3 classrooms provide a structured, specialized environment for learners with unique developmental needs. This ratio ensures that each student receives a tailored educational experience with the support they need. The 12 students can be a mix of individuals with varying disabilities, and the class is designed to address their specific academic and social needs. The teacher provides individualized instruction, and the additional support staff assist with specialized tasks like communication or academic support, depending on each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).These classes benefit our students by providing more individualized attention, specialized instruction, enhanced support for emotional and social development, increased safety and supervision, promote collaboration and teamwork, and improved academic progress.

Intensive and structured 12-month educational programming from
8:00 AM - 3:30 PM for students in 6th Grade through 9th Grade - Curriculum and instructional programs aligned with NYS Learning Standards and the Next Generation Standards
- An Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is developed and implemented for each student, including strategies and goals tailored to their academic and social needs
- Rigorous, language-based learning in small classrooms with low student-to-teacher ratios: 12 students, 2 certified special education teachers, and 2 teaching assistants (12:2:2) or 12 students, 1 certified special education teacher, and 3 teaching assistants (12:1:3)
- Transdisciplinary model focused on language development, enhancing each student’s social, emotional, cognitive, and language skills
- Specialty classes such as dance, music, technology and art
- School-Wide Behavior Plan which encourages appropriate social skills, in the form of a token economy
- Reading Specialist and reading services offered for diagnostic purposes and additional reading support
- Daily Reading and Writing classes
- Individual Occupational Therapy
- Group Occupational Therapy (3 to 5 students)
- Transition planning occurs throughout students' Middle School experience and is tailored to each student’s unique needs, abilities, interests, and strengths.
- Speech and Language Pathologists trained to work with students with apraxia, central auditory processing disorders (CAPD), and hearing loss
- Individual Speech and Language Therapy
- Family and community support, including Parent Training
- Field trips, theme days, school-wide celebrations, and more
- Group Speech and Language Therapy (up to 5 students)
- Individual Counseling Services
- Group Counseling Services (up to 5 students)
- On-site support from a Behavior Specialist and Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs)
- All middle school students receive Tiegerman-issued iPads/Chromebooks

Pre-Vocational Programming
Pre-vocational programming at Tiegerman aligns with CDOS standards and includes courses like Home and Careers and Exploring Careers. These classes teach essential life skills while helping students explore interests, abilities, and work preferences. Students begin developing career plans to support a smooth transition from Middle School to High School and future vocational success.

Travel Training Program
Travel Training equips students with skills to navigate their communities safely and independently. Focusing on reading maps, using public transportation, and practicing pedestrian safety, the program builds confidence through hands-on learning. Students develop problem-solving, time management, and decision-making skills—fostering independence, self-reliance, and the ability to engage in daily activities with greater autonomy.

Retail/Store Program
Through our on-site Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein store, the Retail/School Store program offers hands-on training in a real-world setting. Students build skills in teamwork, customer service, inventory management, and financial literacy while boosting confidence, connecting with peers, and serving their school community—preparing for future academic and career success through fun, practical learning experiences.
