Special Education Science Teacher

The Teacher is responsible for providing instruction aligned with the state learning standards and established curriculum that meets the needs of each individual student, to establish a nurturing and supportive learning environment, to monitor and evaluate student progress and behavior, and to work collaboratively with parents and other members of the school staff. The Classroom Teacher is an exempt position. The Classroom Teacher reports directly to the Coordinators and the Principal. Must hold valid NYSED certification on: Biology Grades 7-12, Students with Disabilities Grades 7-12 or Students with Disabilities All Grades.


Salary Range: $59K – $85K *salary is determined by completed education and years of experience
Eligible positions may receive merit-based salary enhancements one or two times per school year. These are awarded as one-time distributions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise students in the classroom and all other areas of the school building
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning
  • Read, understand, and implement each student’s Individualized Education Plan.
  • Participate in the development of Individualized Education Plans to address the needs of individual students
  • Plan instruction and learning objectives aligned with the New York State and Common Core Learning Standards and IEPs utilizing the school’s established curriculum
  • Adapt instruction and materials to meet the individual needs, strengths, and interests of all students
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student progress toward learning objectives and individual goals through formative and summative assessment in order to inform instruction and provide feedback to students, parents, administrators, and school districts
  • Administer the New York State Regents and RCT Assessments in accordance with established guidelines, instructions, and individual student accommodations for testing
  • Establish and communicate the responsibilities and expectations of teacher assistants
  • Monitor teacher assistants’ implementation of recommended instructional and classroom/individual student management strategies
  • Write and submit lesson plans, curriculum maps, annual classroom reports, and other assigned paperwork in accordance with established guidelines and schedules
  • Accurately interpret and report standardized achievement test scores
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom according to the school wide behavior plan, Behavior Intervention Plans, and student Code of Conduct
  • Serve as a model for both language and behavior in the classroom
  • Maintain a professional relationship with students, colleagues, administrators, parents, and other community members
  • Collaborate with members of the educational, therapeutic, and administrative staff to plan and implement instructional and behavior management goals and methods
  • Establish and maintain open communication and collaborative partnership with parents through conferences and telephone communications
  • Utilize highly effective communication (oral and written) to provide clear and accurate information and maintain professionalism with students, colleagues, administrators, parents, and all other professionals
  • Participate in reflection, self-evaluation, and collaborative discussion with supervisors (i.e., as part of the classroom observation/evaluation process)
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve instructional, curriculum, and classroom management knowledge and skill
  • Participate in various staff meetings as scheduled (i.e., student “staffing” transdisciplinary meetings, teacher meetings, etc.)
  • Maintain the confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with the law and school policies
  • Report incidents for the purpose of maintaining the health and welfare of students and the safety of the school environment in accordance with state regulations and school policies
  • Cover late bus duty once a month (on average)
  • Complete student attendance for each period of the school day
