A Message from Dr. Ellenmorris Tiegerman
When I started Tiegerman (formerly the School for Language and Communication Development, or SLCD) in 1985, we began as a small preschool and elementary school with just 36 students. What started as a modest effort to support children with language and developmental challenges has grown into something extraordinary. Over the past four decades, we’ve expanded to include additional preschools, middle schools, high schools, and a robust program for young adults with disabilities: Tiegerman Community Services (TCS).
While our growth has been deeply rewarding, the true joy comes from seeing how our programs empower individuals at every stage of life. As our children grow into young adults, our responsibility extends beyond education to building brighter futures. That’s why I’m especially proud of our Vocational Training Programs and partnerships with companies like Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger. These hands-on experiences give students the practical skills and confidence they need to succeed and be work ready. Our focus on life skills and college-level learning to prepare all our students for adulthood.
For those not on the college track, we offer day habilitation and pre-vocational programs, as well as residential facilities. These supports are critical for young adults striving for independence. This was the foundation when I started Tiegerman Community Services (TCS) – TCS plays a vital role in this mission.
TCS offers day habilitation services across Long Island and Queens, with 26 minivans transporting adults with developmental disabilities to volunteer and work experiences in their communities. Economic challenges can make expanding and funding these programs difficult, but we remain steadfast in our commitment to our ultimate goal. Just as we once said, “Language First” for our young children, we now embrace the vision of “Independence at Last” for our adults.
Tiegerman is more than a school or service provider—we are a family. Together, we are building brighter futures for every child, adult, and family we serve.
Thank you for being part of our journey.
Warm regards,
Dr. Ellenmorris Tiegerman
